March 13, 2003 - AUSTIN
by Aimee Giammo
Austin Siamese Rescue was one of several groups called upon to help rescue cats in the San Antonio area after a collector died in February, leaving behind over 200 cats. According to the Wilson County News, the owner was dead for 16 days before anyone realized there was a problem. As a result, over 100 cats died before a rescue effort could be made.
As of March 13, approximately 97 cats have been trapped. According to Sheila Smith of Austin, all the cats seem to be between the ages of 6 months and 3 years old. It is believed any smaller kittens may have been eaten by the older cats.
This rescue effort was directed by Cindy Healer, manager of the Bexar County Humane Society / SPCA. Other rescue organizations involved in this effort were the Humane Society / SPCA of Austin and Travis County, Oak Hill Rescue (in South Austin), and Dr. Roy and Sheila Smith of the North Austin Animal Hospital.
