Milo is either 2 years old or 4 years old, depending on source document. I’ve been waiting for him to settle into a describable entity, but he keeps developing!
Milo was rescued out of a rough place; a relative of his owner took him in when she saw he wasn't being fed or given clean water and litter. When he came into her home, he was still unsure of things, and would attack and bite her cats, and sometime he would bite her.
When we took him in, we gave him his own space for as long as he wanted it so that he could get used to the sounds and smells of our home while interacting safely with our cats, who would talk to him through the wire pen. I let him tell me when he was ready to move in with the family, and he had a smooth transition.
I make sure he has plenty to eat and receives lots of love. He’s great at adoption day with people who visit him, he ignores our dog, he tolerates cats who are kind to him, but he and a couple of our bullies sometimes have arguments. He’s smart, talks a lot when he’s hungry, and at meal time he escorts me to his old pen where I feed him alone. I think he wants to be the alpha cat here, but he keeps running into the entrenched cat bureaucracy with our 3 co-alphas. We respect his boundaries, and he in turn respects ours, so he doesn't feel the need to behave aggressively towards us.
To anyone who is thinking of bringing him into their family, he needs space and time. We let him decide when to join family activities, and we make sure he has access to plenty of food and fresh water. (He just hopped up next to me on the futon, asked for pets, then waded through a group of cats to the dry food bowl for his post-breakfast snack.) He behaved very well at the vet's office, tolerating being handled and poked and prodded.
